Types of Refinishing We Offer

Not every floor needs the same amount of work. Here's how the three options compare, from most involved to least.

Buff & Recoat

For floors that aren't ready to give up yet. We lightly abrade the existing finish and lay a fresh topcoat on top — no stain, no bare wood. Runs about half the cost of a full refinish, and can buy a floor several more years if the finish is still intact.

 Most Common

Full Sand & Refinish

Sanding down to bare wood, removing the old finish and any damage, then applying new stain and topcoats. Every step is dust-contained — dustless isn't an add-on here, it's simply how we sand. The right call when the finish has worn through or you're changing the color.

Deep Clean & Revive

For floors that are basically fine but need a little love. No sanding, no downtime — a professional deep clean brings back the shine in a single day.

Gorsegner Brothers did an AMAZING job sanding and staining the floors in my 101 year old house!! They were in really rough shape, but they worked a miracle and they look BRAND new! The repair that they completed in one of the bedrooms was seamless; you don't even notice it! We discovered hardwoods buried under layers of other flooring in the kitchen. When I asked Travis what he thought about trying to refinish them, with years of adhesives and layers, he was honest and recommended we not spend the money on it because he couldn't guarantee the outcome. That honesty and professionalism is SO appreciated, and another reason why I highly recommend Gorsegner's! I can't leave out the office staff; the level of communication was top notch!!

I wanted to take a moment to write a review for this company as I had them help me with an extensive flooring project a few months ago. Initially I had hired them for a "simple" sanding and staining job. Unfortunately, they discovered substantial structural damage under the master bedroom floor which resulted in a complete rebuild of the underlying floor joists and subfloor, as well as reinstall of hardwood flooring. Several days turned into a multiple week and much more costly endeavor, but everyone involved made it a seamless and smooth project. The ease of scheduling was one of my favorite parts; not to mention the absolutely gorgeous final product that I am obsessed with. As I have further flooring work to be done - which is inevitable in my fixer upper recently purchased home - I am looking forward to working with Gorsegner Brothers again!

I am very happy that I selected Dan and his company to sand, refinish and stain our floors. Very professional, from front desk, working with Dan, and the gentlemen who redid our floors. Hardwood Refinishing FAQ

Our Dust Containment System is certified as being 99% dust free. It is the best system on the market today.
Our talented technicians will sand a small area of your floor and lay up to 5 samples for you to choose from. This is the best way to see how the stain will look; taking into account the lighting, wall colors, porousness of your wood floors and various other factors.
Most refinishing jobs take 2–4 days: one day for sanding and staining, then 1–2 days for finishing coats with proper dry time between each coat.
You need to be available on day one for stain selection — that's the only time we require you to be on-site. After that, it really depends on what you can comfortably live with. Most of our clients stay home throughout the entire refinishing process.
A large benefit to our water-based polyurethane is that it is quick-drying. Roughly 3 hours after the coat has been applied, you can walk on the floor. Please do so in a clean, dry rubber-soled shoe, no bare foot or socks. Furniture can go back 24 hours after the final coat has been applied. We suggest you wait 3 full days before laying area rugs.
Most NJ homeowners pay $4–$6 per square foot, or about $5,000 for a typical 1,000 sq ft first floor. The exact number depends on the floor's condition, whether you're adding stain, and whether stairs are involved. See the full cost breakdown →
Almost always, refinishing is cheaper. New hardwood installed runs $8–$15 per square foot versus $4–$6 to refinish. The exception is when the wood is too thin to sand again — you need about 3/32 of an inch above the tongue and groove for another pass. Read more on refinishing vs. replacing →
Most of our clients stay home throughout the entire refinishing process. Our dust containment system is 99% dust free and our finish is a low-VOC water-based product that dries fast and doesn't fill the house with fumes.
