A lot of what we get called for in Princeton is a floor somebody has already been told to tear out. An original plank floor in the Historic District. A parquet room in a pre-war house. A frame house in Witherspoon-Jackson that's been added onto twice. An estate in the Western Section where a century of foot traffic finally caught up. Most of the time there's still enough wood left to save it, and saving it is the better answer.

Saving it means sanding no deeper than the floor actually needs, cutting in replacement boards you won't be able to pick out later, and matching a finish to wood that's been darkening for a hundred years. It's slow work, and on floors this old it's the only kind that holds up. Our showroom is in Holmdel, about forty minutes east. Three generations of our family have been doing this work since 1951, and we cover Princeton, Princeton Junction, West Windsor and the rest of Mercer County.

We Measure Before We Sand

A floor only has so much wood above the tongue, and most floors in Princeton's older homes have been sanded at least once already. We measure what's left before we start, and take off the least that will do the job, so there's a next time.

The Color Is Tested on Your Floor

Wood that has been darkening for a century takes stain nothing like new oak. Samples go down on your own boards, in your own light, and you sign off before anything touches the rest of the floor.

Can 18th- and 19th-century hardwood floors actually be restored, or do they have to be replaced? Restoration

In most cases they can be restored. Original floors in Princeton's older homes are usually solid plank or strip, and there is normally enough thickness left to sand and refinish. We check board thickness, cupping, gaps and any previous sandings before quoting. Replacement is the last resort, not the opening suggestion.

Do you restore parquet floors? Parquet

Yes. Parquet turns up all over Princeton's pre-war and mid-century homes, and it can't be treated like a plank floor. The grain runs in several directions at once, so sanding it the usual way tears the wood out. Damaged blocks get cut out and replaced one at a time rather than patched over.

How do you match a finish to floors laid a century ago? Matching

Finish and stain matching is one of our specialties. Old wood takes stain very differently from new, so we test on your own boards in your own light before committing to the whole floor. That includes blending new work into original floors where a room has been added or a section repaired.

How long does a whole-home refinish take, and do we have to move out? Timeline

It depends on square footage, the number of coats and the drying time between them. Furniture comes out of the rooms being worked on. Some homeowners stay and we work room by room; others prefer to be out for the finish coats. We walk you through the sequence before we start so you can plan around it.
